Narsi Mehta was acclaimed as AdiKavi (Sanskrit for “first among poets”) in Gujarati literature.
Gujarat is one of the States in India which is famous for able leaders, beautiful temples and architecture, Gir forests and saints. One of Gandhiji’s favourite bhajans while conducting his prayers was ‘Vaishnava JanatoTeneKahiye’. The composer of this song was none other than the well known saint, Narsi Mehta.
Narasimha Mehta, better known as Narsi Mehta, hailed from Gujarat where the Bhakti movement had travelled to and then farther off to Kutch and Sind through Rajasthan and Punjab. Narsi Mehta was a Vaishnava devotee and sang the praises of Lord Krishna. Narsi Mehta (1414-1481) was the first devotee whose songs, about 740 in number, became very popular. He sang of his love for Krishna and His sports or frolics, and attracted people by the depth of his faith and simplicity wherever he went.
It is learnt Narsi Mehta belonged to a Vadanagar Nagar-Brahmin family of Junagadh in Kathiawar, Gujarat. Narsi Mehta came from a very poor family and lived with his brother and sister-in-law. As Narsi Mehta did not take any interest in the household affairs nor earn anything, his brother’s wife ill-treated him and taunted him.
But Narsi Mehta was oblivion of all this and he only sang the songs of Lord Krishna and danced in ecstasy. He had unspeakable faith in God that He would provide him with all his wants. Narsi married Manek Bai and had a daughter named Kunwar Bai and a son called Shyamaldas.

ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય ફોરમની સુંગધ
આજે આઠમાં મણકા સુધી પહોંચી અને ઝડપથી ફેલાઈ રહી છે.... આજેજે હિરસમા એવા આપણા સાહિત્યમાં આગવું નામ જવાહરભાઈ બક્ષીની ઓળખ વિધીનું નામ આપવા કરતાં જીવનનો ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય માટેનો લગાવ અને તેઓની સિદ્ધિઓ વર્ણાવી કોકિલાબેન ચોકસીએ તેઓને ભાવભીનો આવકાર આપ્યો.
ડો. જવાહરભાઈની શરુઆત ગુજરાતી ભાષાનો પ્રેમ ગુજરાતી મારી માતાથી છે તયાંથી શુભારંભ કર્યો. તેઓની લખેલ કવિતાઓ તથા ગઝલોનો સમન્વયે એકફયુઝનનો અહેસાસ કરાવયો એવું ચોક્કસ માની શકાય.
ગુજરાતી ભાષા પ્રાચીન ૧૧ પ્રાકૃતમાંથી અશોકના વખત પછી થી ૨૭ અપભ્રંશ થયાં. અલલાઉદિન ખિલજીના પછીથી રાજ્યમાં ગુજરાતી વડા તરીકે ભાણજીભાઈ પંડયા જય હાટકેશ્વરના નામ સાથે વડનગરાના નાગર ૬૮ જણાના કાફલા સાથે સૌરાષ્ટ્ર ગયાં.
નરસિંહ મહેતાનાે જન્મ તળાજા ખાતે સમય ૧૪૦૪ થી ૧૪૧૪ થવાનું કોઇપણ તથ્ય હાથવગુ નહોવાથી વચચેના માર્ગ પ્રમાણે જન્મ ૧૪૧૦ થયાંનું મનાયું ...તેઓની કમઁભૂમિ જૂનાગઢ રહી. તેઓની યાત્રા પોપટથી લઇ પરમહંસ સુધીના તેઓના ભજનોમાં ઉલ્લેખકર્યો છે... યાદગાર ... પદોકેકાવ્યજેવાંકેઆત્મચરિત્રકેભજનકહીશકાય.
તેઓ શ્રીએ સુંદર છણાવટ લોજીકલ રીતે પણ સમજાવી.. જે આજની યાદગાર પળો વર્ણાવી શકાય..
1. કૃષણ અને નાગણ વચચેનો સંવાદ વિરોધાભાસોમાં પણ સુંદ રલોજીકથી સમજાવ્યું
2. મેરું લઈ જુનાગઢથી દ્વારકા સુધી લોકોની મશ્કરી પણ સહન કરી નીધણી બધીદ્વિધામાં પહોંચવું અને કૃષ્ણએ પુરેલ શેહની સુંદર છણાવટ કરી ...
3. અખિલબ્રહ્માંડના વરવા વિચાર સાથે ૩૬૦ દિવસ ... ૩૬૦ અક્ષાંસની પૃથ્વી પર જાણે માયાનું વર્તુળ કરીને બેઠાનો અહેસાસની સમજ આપી. છતાં સર્વેસરા શ્રીહરીતું જ છે.
આ સુંદર વ્યાખ્યાનનો ન જોઈતો છતાં પણ સમયનો અભાવને લીધે સમાપન કરવું પડ્યું . ડો. જવાહરભાઈ પાસે ફરીથી જ્ઞાન તથા આ વિષય પર વધુ લાહો આપે એજ ભાવના સાથે આભારવિધિ કરી. આવયાખયાનમાં ભાગ લેનાર સર્વે ખાસ આભાર... ફરીથી આવતા ગુરુવારની રાહ જોવી ... એનો વિકલ્પન હોવાથી એક નવાવિચારક ... નવાવિષયસાથે.... શુભેચ્છક - દિનેશશાહ.
