ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય ફોરમ દ્વારા આયોજીત વક્તવ્ય ના વક્તા હતા આસિત. દેસાઈ, ગુજરાતી કોઈ ભાગ્યે જ એવું ઘર હશે જે તેમના ગીત સંગીત થી અજાણ હોય. સંગીત પ્રેમી ના દરેક ઘરમાં તેમના અને હેમાબહેનના ગીતો નું એક ચોક્કસ સ્થાન છે.
ગુજરાતી સુગમ સંગીત ને સમર્પિત આસિતભાઈ એ વક્તવ્ય શરુ કરતા સરળ ભાષા માં સુગમ સંગીત નો અર્થ સ્પષ્ટ કર્યો. સુગમ સંગીત એટલે જેમાં શબ્દ અને સ્વર બંને હોય. અત્યારે મહદ્અંશે કાવ્ય સંગીત જાણીતું થયું છે.ગુજરાતી ગીતો લખાતા ગયા , જેમાં શબ્દ અને સંગીત બંને હોય , તેનું સ્વરાંકન થાય ને જ તેને પ્રસ્તુત કરે તે ગાયક.
સુગમ સંગીત નો સમૃધ્ધ વારસો નરસિંહ મહેતા એ તેમના પદો અને ભજનો દ્વારા આપ્યો, તેના રચયિતા નો શ્રેય નરસિંહ મહેતા ને ફાળે જાય છે . આજે પણ ખાસ્સા લોક્રપ્રિય છે. ત્યારબાદ મીરાંબાઈ અને કવિ દલરામના ભજનો, પદો ને કવિતા એ લોકચાહના મેળવી. ખૂબ જ સરળતા થી સમજાય તેવા ભજનો ગીતો નરસિંહ મહેતા અને મીરાંબાઈ ના વખતમાં તેઓએ રચ્યા એટલે સુગમ સંગીત તરીકે જાણીતા થયા.
આગળ જતા તે સુગમ ન રહ્યા , કવિઓ એ જુદા જુદા પ્રયોગો કર્યા , તેને સંગીતના ઢાંચામા ઢાળવા , તબલાં હાર્મોનિયમ જેવા વાંજિંત્રો સાથે લયબધ્ધ કરતા ગયા ને નવા યુગનો પ્રારંભ થયો, જેમાં અવિનાશ. વ્યાસનું નામ મોખરે કહીશકાય. તેમની બેવડી સર્જકતા માં ગીત, ભજન, ગરબા, કવિતા ને ગઝલનો ઉમેરો થયો. તેમનું સુગમ સંગીત અવિનાશ સંગીત તરીકે પ્રસિદ્ધિ પામ્યું. રવિન્દ્ર સંગીત કરતા સમજવું પણ સરળ હતું. તેમની કવિતા માં જ એટલી શક્તિ હતી કે પ્રેરણાં મળે. આસિતભાઈ એ તેમના પત્ની હેમાબહેનસાથે ઘણાં ગીતો અવિનાશભાઈ ની કવિતામાંથી સ્વરાંકન composed કર્યા.
સુગમ સંગીત ત્રણ બિલીપત્રો નેબદલે ચાર બિલ્વપત્રો ના સંયોજન તરીકે આસિતભાઈ એ વર્ણવ્યું .ચોથા પત્રનો શ્રેય પ્રેક્ષક, શ્રોતાજનો ને આપ્યો, પણ શ્રોતા એવા હોવા જોઈએ જેને ગુજરાતી ભાષા ના સ્વર, શબ્દ ની સમજ હોય, ગાયક ઘણી મહેનત કરી ને શબ્દો ના ભાવ તેની ગાયકી માં પ્રસ્તુત કરે છે, તેથી પ્રેક્ષકો ની દાદ તેનામાં ઉત્સાહ જગાવે છે. તેથીચોથું પત્ર ખૂબ અગત્યનું છે.વધુમાં ઉમે્ર્યુ ….ગુજરાતી ભાષા સચવાશે તો જ સુગમ સંગીત નું ભાવિ ઉજ્જવળ છે.
આજની પેઢીમાં ગુજરાતી વાંચન નથી રહ્યું , તેને માટે પ્રયત્નો થવા જોઈએ, ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય ફોરમ સતત તેને માટે પ્રયત્નશીલ છે, તેનેઆસિત ભાઈએ બિરદાવ્યું.
અવિનાશ વ્યાસ, મીનુ મજમુદાર શ્યામલ મુન્શી જેવાએ સુગમ સંગીત માટે ઘણું કામ કર્યું છે.પુરુષોત્તમ ઉપાધ્યાય , ગૌરાંગ વ્યાસ ને પરેશ ભટ્ટ જેવા એ ઘણાં અખતરા કરીને નવી પેઢીને સુગમ સંગીત પ્રત્યે વાળવા ઉમદા સંગીત પીરસ્યુંછે. સુગમ સંગીતને આગવું રૂપ આપનાર પુરુષોત્તમઉપાધ્ધાય. સૌમિલ ને શ્યામલ પણ સુંદર કામ કરી રહ્યા છે. ઘણાં સ્વરકારે ગીત, ગઝલ, ગરબા બધું જ સ્વરાંકન કર્યું છે, તેમાં ક્ષેમકુશળ દિવેટિયા ને દક્ષેશ ધ્રુવ એ સુંદર કામ કર્યું છે. વળી રમેશ પારેખ ની રચના તો એવી કે તેમને તો લયો નો રાજા કહેવાનાં જરાય અતિશયોક્તિ ન કહી શકાય સુગમ સંગીત નાટક માં પણ સામેલ થયું , જે નાટય સંગીત તરીકે જાણીતુંથયું. ગુજરાતી ગઝલ, બહું ઓછા સમજે છે. પણ તેની પણ રચના થવી જોઈએ . જવાહર બક્ષી ની ગઝલ સારું સ્થાન પામી છે.
મનહર ઉધાસે પણ ગીત, ગરબા ભજન ગઝલ વિ 20, 22 આલ્બમ બનાવ્યા છે. કોઈ રેકોર્ડ કંપની ગુજરાતી ગીત ને promote નથી કરતી તે દુખદ્ બાબત છે.
આસિત ભાઈ એ નવી પેઢી ને પ્રોત્સાહન મળે તેવી વાતકરતા કહ્યું કે તેમનો દીકરો આલાપ પારંપારીક અને પ્રયોગાત્મક સુગમ સંગીત ને સાંકળી presentation કરે છે. ખૂબ સુંદર , અમારા પરીવારના સભ્યો ની શુભેચ્છા અને અભિનંદન.
લગભગ 40 વર્ષ થી આસિતભાઈ માત્ર સુગમ સંગીતની સેવા કરી રહ્યા છે. રેકોર્ડીંગ પણ પોતાના ખર્ચે કરીઅવિરત કામ 70 વર્ષ ની ઉંમરે પણ ચાલૂ રાખ્યું છે, એટલું જ નહીં તેમનો સંસ્કાર વારસો દીકરા આલાપ મા પણ જીવંત છે. જયાં સુધી આસિત ભાઈ જેવા નિસ્વાર્થ ભાવે સંગીતની આરાધના કરનારા કલાકારો ભારતમાં છે ને હશે, ત્યાંસુધી સુગમ સંગીત નું ભાવિ ઉજ્જવળ છે તેમાં કોઇ શંકા ને સ્થાન નથી.
ખૂબ ખૂબ અભિનંદન આસિતભાઈ તમારા વક્તવ્ય મા તો તમારા સ્વર મા વહી જવા જેવી અનુભૂતિ સૌને થઈ.

Like a spring of water bursting forth from the earth, the music within Ashit is a force eager to be released. And it is a force that cannot be confined to just one form or expression. Ashit's repertoire flows both wide and deep. In his rich, baritone voice he sings for both audiences as well as recordings; he composes & arranges music; he arranges its performance. Well known for his soulful light-classical renderings he is equally sought after for his creative faculty which covers an astoundingly wide range; from composing scores for dramas, dance ballets, TV serials & films to innovative effervescent jingles. "Versatile" is the word to sum up Ashit's creative endeavour & genius. Musical talent has come to Ashit as a parental inheritance. After a degree in Commerce, Baroda-born Ashit took a Diploma in Vocal music from M.S. University and came down to Bombay with a single minded determination to carve a niche for himself in the world of music. On his firm foundation he has raised a large & intricate edifice of musical accomplishment.
Ashit has been honoured time and again by the music world. At 18, he won the All India Radio's Best Singer Award. That was in 1969. Since then, accolades, distinctions and awards have come his way in profusion, including the Gujarat State Award in 1976 & 1989. He has earned unstinted acclaim for his music direction in the monumental Doordarshan serial "Chanakya".
Ashit's association with Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar is possibly the most significant phase of his career. The maestro enlisted Ashit in composing music for the Asiad, and placed him in charge of overall coordination of cultural events. This brought him the conferment of the coveted Asiad Jyoti Medal by the President of India. Ashit also sang devotional songs for Attenborough's film "Gandhi". In 1988, he conducted Panditji's orchestral compositions at the closing ceremony of the Festival of India in Moscow. As the maestro's assistant, orchestra conductor and singer, he toured the UK and India in 1989 with Panditji's Ballet, "Ghanashyam". Ashit has also recently received an award for the Best Music Director in the Gujarati TV serial "Shraddha".
These and other honors sit lightly on Ashit Desai's shoulders. In his restless quest for excellence, Ashit has his moorings firmly rooted in tradition; but he revels in experimenting with creative variations within the broad framework of the poetic mood which is being evoked. As a composer, his style reveal distinct flashes of individuality and is also replete with emotion. He tackles difficult themes with effortless ease, lending a masterly touch to his compositions. Over the last two and a half decades , Ashit has crafted a rich and varied body of work…….yet his musical talent flows on unabated. So much done, so much yet to do!
