Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA), meaning "service" in several Indian languages, is a trade union based in Ahmedabad, India, that promotes the rights of low-income, independently employed female workers. Nearly 2 million workers are members of the Self-Employed Women’s Association across eight states in India. Self-employed women are defined as those who do not have a fixed employer-employee relationship and do not receive a fixed salary and social protection like that of formally-employed workers and therefore have a more precarious income and life. SEWA organises around the goal of full employment in which a woman secures work, income, food, and social security like health care, child care, insurance, pension and shelter. ગુજરાતી સાહિત્યફોરમ આયોજીત વક્તવ્યના વક્તા હતા રીમા નાણાવટી. લગભગ 40 વર્ષથી ‘સેવા’ સંસ્થાના નિયામક તરીકે ઉત્કૃષ્ટ કામગીરી નિભાવી રહ્યા છે. એક સામાજિક કાર્યકર હોવા ઉપરાંત ઉમદાવ્યક્તિત્વના પણ સ્વામિની છે, ભારતનાં ઉચ્ચતમ સન્માનિત એવોર્ડ પદ્મશ્રી થી તેમને નવાજવામાં આવ્યા છે તેનોશ્રેય , રીમાબેન તેમની સાથે સેવામાં જોડાયેલ બહેનોનેઆપે છે.
આજથી 50 વર્ષ પહેલાં 1972માં ઈલાબહેનેસેવા સંસ્થાની સ્થાપના કરી. તેના પાયામાંઅનસૂયા બહેને સ્થાપેલ મજૂર મહાજન સંઘની વિચારસરણી હતી. ગાંધીજીએ પણ બહેનોને સંગઠિત કરી તેમને કાર્યપદ્ધતિનું જ્ઞાન આપી સ્વનિર્ભરકરવાની પ્રવૃતિને ટેકો આપ્યો હતો.
ભારતમાં લગભગ 93% કામદાર વર્ગ છે. ખેત મજૂર,લારીગલ્લાવાળા, મિલકામદાર હાથલારી ને છૂટક ધંધામાં કામ કરતા લોકો અભણ અથવા અલ્પશિક્ષિત હોય છે. મહિલાઓ મોટેભાગે ઘર કામકાજ નેબાળકો સંભાળે છે. તેમને સંગઠિત કરી દરેક બાબતોથી શિક્ષિત કરવાનું કામ ‘સેવા’સંસ્થા કરે છે. માત્ર 10 રૂ. માં તેમને “સેવા” ના સભ્ય બનાવી સ્વનિર્ભર કરેછે. દરેક સ્ત્રીમાં કંઇક તો હુન્નરહોય છે. સિલાઇકામ, ભરતગૂંથણ કે શાકલારી કે ખેતમજૂર તરીકે આવડતપ્રમાણે કામ કરવાનું માર્ગદર્શન સંસ્થા દ્વારા આપવામાં આવે છે. વળી તેમનેબચત જ્ઞાન સાથે પોસ્ટ, બેંક ની પણ માહિતી આપી જાતે પૈસા
જમા કે ઉપાડ કરી શકે તે શીખવવામાં આવે છે. પોતાનું જીવન સારી રીતે જીવી શકે, તેનું આર્થિક, શારીરિક
શોષણ ના થાય તેમાટે હિંમત ને પોતાની લડાઇ પોતે લડે તે માટે જાગ્રત કરવામાં આવે છે. કચરો ને કાગળ વીણતી મહિલાનું જીવન ખૂબ સંઘર્ષભર્યું હોય છે તેમને બળ તેતાકત મળે ને પોતાનું રહેવા માટે છાપરું કરી શકે તે માટે સંસ્થા સતત પ્રયત્નશીલ રહેછે.
બનાસકાંઠા ને રણવિસ્તારમાં પાણીની અછત તેથી ત્યાં બહેનોને સંગઠિત કરી પાણી અછતને પહોંચી વળવાકેળવણી ને શિક્ષણ આપવાનું , દુષ્કાળગ્રસત વિસ્તારમાં રાહત કામગીરી સરકાર દ્વારા શરુ થાય ત્યારે તેમાં જોડાઇ જવા બહેનોને તૈયારકરવાનું ભગીરથ કામ ‘સેવા ‘ કરે છે.
તેમની સંસ્થામાં 30 લાખ બહેનો જોડાઇ છે. 14 લાખ તો માત્રગુજરાતમાં છે. રીમાબહેનની સેવા ને બિરદાવતા ભારત સરકારે તેમને અફઘાનિસ્તાન, પાકિસ્તાન,શ્રીલંકા નેકાશ્મીર જેવા વિસ્તારોમાં બહેનોને સ્વનિર્ભરતાના પાઠ ભણાવવા મોકલ્યા. આજે તાલિબાનના રાજમાં 7000 બહેનો તેમનાપરિવારને ટકાવી રહી છે તેનો શ્રેય રીમાબહેનને જાય છે. રીમાબહેનની મહેનતથી આજે ઘણી બહેનો આગળ આવી છે, તેમની પોતાનીબ્રાન્ડ છે ડીજીટલ માધ્યમથી પોતાનો વ્યવસાય કરે છે. તેમની પાસે આજે જમીન છે, ખેતી સાથે હુન્નર પણ વિકસાવ્યો છે. ખેતીમાં પણ આમૂલપરિવર્તન આવ્યું છે. પોતાના પતિને દીકરાને સાચું પીઠબળપૂરું પાડે છે. વહુ ને દીકરીમાં કોઇ ભેદભાવ દાખવતા નથી.એક પરિકલ્પના સમાન સુંદર સમાજનું નિર્માણ કરવાનું ભગીરથ કાર્ય રીમાબહેન કરી રહ્યાછે. તેમની સેવા સંસ્થા 50 વર્ષથી કાર્યરત છે ને ઘણી યુવાબહેનો સંસ્થા સાથે જોડાયેલી છે તેથી લક્ષ તેમનું 100 વર્ષને આંબવાનુંછે.તેમના મુખ્ય project માં વૃક્ષારોપણ, સોલર એનર્જી નોવપરાશ, જળ વાયુ પરિવર્તનને નાથવાનો પ્રયાસ મુખ્ય છે.

Reema Nanavaty has been working with the SEWA since over 36 years expanding its
membership to over 2.5 million members, making it the single largest union of informal sector women workers.
Reema facilitated rebuilding lives and livelihoods of 60000 earthquake affected rural women and 40000riot-affected members. She is leading the rehabilitation programs in Afghanistan, training over 5000 Afghani women on different Livelihood skills and facilitating them in setting-up their own local Association. Similarly, she has also led the rehabilitation program for war-affected widows in Srilanka;providing over 6000 women with vocational training in rural livelihood security.
Reema oversees 4813 self-help groups (SHG), 160 co-operatives and 15 economic federations, pan India including 18 states, and also in 7 South-Asian countries, focusing on women’s economic empowerment by building women owned enterprises, building women led supply chains,introducing modern ICT-based tools and facilitating Green-Energy initiatives and livelihoods.
She was honored by Padma Shri(the fourth-highest civilian award in the Republic of India) for her contribution in area of Social Services in 2013. She is currently the member of the Advisory Council on Gender of the World Bank Group.
Reema Nanavaty was invited to the International Labour Organization’s High Level Global Commission on Future of Work as the only member representing the informal sector workers, women workers, self-employed workers and the rural workers’ union in the entire commission.
She was also invited as a member of the working group for the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy and as a Genderlead in the Working group for the UN's Food System Summit, both convened by UNG eneral Secretary in the UNGA, Sep 2021. Reema was also one of the only worker’s representative invited to speak alongside UN secretary General Antonio Gueteras in the Official Opening Ceremony of the UN’s Food Systems Summit 2021. She is also a member of the Advisory committee of World Bank on Gender.
