Dr. Adam Takarvi
Gazalkar
Adam Tankaravi, is credited with taking Gujarati Gazal, a form of poetry, to England, where he migrated in 1966. After that, poets and gazal writers of diaspora wrote many gazals. He has been one of the prominent exponent of gazal writing.
He was born on 27th September, 1940 in the Tankaria village of Bharuch district in Gujarat. His original name is Adam Musa Ghodiwala. He completed his primary and secondary education in the school of Tankaria. After that he obtained his B.A. degree from Jayhind college of Mumbai and did his post-graduation with English as main subject from M. T. B college of Surat. After that he completed B. Ed, M. Ed and Ph. D from Sardar Patel university, Vallabh Vidyanagar.
He started his career as a teacher and serve from 1962 till 1968 in Tankaria high school, Karmad high school and Jivanbharti school at Surat. He joined Miyagam Karjan college as a lecturer in English and then as a professor of English language in H. M. Patel institute of English. In the illustrious career spanning for twenty-two years, he was involved in writing text books, conducting workshops, teaching and editing.
After taking voluntary retirement, he migrated to England in 1991, served as a Principal of Bolton Girls high school and a lecturer at Preston college, before retiring in 2001.
Right from childhood, he has been interested in gazal. His first book containing gazals, was published in 1971. After that he has contributed in this field significantly.
He is famous for writing gazals in Gujlish, which is a judicious mixture of Gujarati and English.
He has received many awards for his poetry as also for his long career in serving Gujarati literature in general and gazal in particular.
